Gambling Facts
What turns an innocent pastime into an addiction as devastating as alcohol, as addicting as heroin? Some experts say that the compulsive gambler has a particular brain chemistry that has been identified as a possible cause.
"What this disease [addictive gambling] leads to is prison, insanity, or death. That's the end stage of this disease. If you bail someone out, it may kill them. A bail out is the same as a win to a gambler."
- Dr. Robert Hunter, Addictive Gambling Counselor
"Gambling's just a powerful draw for many reasons. I know the feeling a person gets when they're compulsive. They stockpile that money to stay “in action.” You don't spend that money on food - you got to spend that money to stay in action."
- Anthony Curtis, Publisher-Huntington Press
Not everyone who gambles develops a problem, but according to the National Council on Problem Gambling there is a certain percentage of gamblers who develop an overwhelming uncontrollable impulse to gamble. And while there are many treatment programs for people suffering from chemical dependency, there are few programs addressing compulsive gambling.
